SEWING FABRIC RIGHT SIDE TO RIGHT SIDE: My Tips to Avoid Mistakes
All fabrics have a right side and a wrong side. The right side, is the beautiful side, the one that will be visible on the outside of the garment. The wrong sideside is the less attractive side, often duller or less worked, and it's the one that will remain on the inside.
Identifying the right side of denim is quite simple. The right side is the indigo side, and the wrong side is the pale, almost gray side.
How do I identify the right side of the fabric?
To identify the right and wrong sides of the fabric, here's what I look for:
Color intensity : the right side is often more vibrant.
Patterns: they are clearer and more defined on the right side.
Texture and softness : the right side may have more texture and feel softer.
Shine : some fabrics are shinier on the right side
Why always sew right side to right side?
In sewing, it's essential to assemble fabrics right side facing each other (ou so that the seamsare hidden on the inside of the garment.
When you start sewing, it may seem a little counterintuitive because we often want to see the beautiful side of the fabric as we sew. But if you sew wrong side facing each other, the seam allowances will be visible on the outside of the garment... and unless otherwise it is most of the time not what we want!
My tips to avoid sewing mistakes
I always double-check before sewing : a moment of attention helps avoid the need to unpick. But you know the saying... every person who sews will have to unpick at some point.
I use clips or pins to keep my fabrics in place.
With a bit of practice, sewing right side to right side becomes second nature. But even after several years of experience, I still make mistakes when I'm not paying attention.
Now that you know how to place your fabrics right side to right side, I invite you to check out my next post on perfect pinning. I’ll show you how to use pins or clips effectively to avoid pleats and keep your pieces in place.
